The Sticker System Explained

At Maroon & Tidy, we've developed a simple but powerful method for making decluttering decisions: The Sticker System. It's designed to push you (gently!) toward keeping only what you actually use—without letting your stuff rule your life.

How It Works

We work through your space category by category. Instead of randomly picking up items, we group similar things together into piles:

  • All your coffee mugs in one pile
  • All your candles in another
  • Figurines together, books together, kitchen gadgets together

This is powerful because you finally see exactly how much you have. You might think you have "a reasonable number" of coffee mugs—until you see all 27 of them on the counter at once.

The Four Sticker Colors

Green = Keep

Items you love AND use regularly. These earn their spot in your home.

Yellow = Discuss

Items you're unsure about. We'll revisit these together at the end.

Red = Remove

Items ready to go—broken, unused, or no longer serving you.

Blue = Donate

Items in good condition that could bless someone else.

The Secret Sauce: Limited Stickers

Here's what makes our system different: you get a limited number of green and yellow stickers for each pile.

For example:

If you have a pile of 25 candles, I might give you 5 green stickers and 3 yellow stickers. The rest? Red or blue. This forces you to choose your favorites instead of keeping everything "just in case."

You always have the final say—but my job is to help you be honest with yourself about what you actually use versus what's just taking up space.

What Happens to the Yellows?

At the end of our session, we revisit every yellow-stickered item together. For each one, I'll ask you to justify keeping it:

  • What benefit does this bring to your life?
  • When did you last use it?
  • Where will it live? (If it doesn't have a home, it becomes clutter)

This isn't about being harsh—it's about being intentional. Some yellows become greens. Others become reds once you talk through them. Either way, you're making conscious decisions instead of just accumulating.

Why This Works

Forces real choices

Limited stickers mean you can't keep everything

Visual & concrete

Stickers make decisions tangible and final

Reduces decision fatigue

Clear categories mean less mental energy

Built-in accountability

Yellow items get discussed, not forgotten
